Citation Instruction

How to cite texts from Literature Online

1. How to find the bibliographic details.

There are a number of ways of retrieving the bibliographic details of a work in Literature Online:

  • from search results page in Search: Texts or Search: Criticism and Reference, you can check boxes for the texts which you wish to add to your Marked List; then, you can go to the Marked List page to save, print or email these records. You can either email them in plain text, or in a format compatible with the reference manager software packages EndNote, ProCite, Reference Manager or RefWorks.
  • from a full text page in either Texts or Criticism and Reference, you can click on the 'Save this citation' link; this will take you directly to a download page where you can email the citation, either in text format or in a reference manager format.
  • articles and entries in Criticism and Reference all have an index card link index card link; this takes you to the Full Record page, which contains the complete bibliographic details, which you can copy and paste into a Word document or email.
  • if you download a complete volume of primary texts (from a Texts search, or from the Complete Contents page), you will find the Bibliographic Details at the top of the full text, which you can copy and paste into a Word document or email. This can also be accessed via the Table of Contents for each volume.

2. Citation formats.

Most of the contents of Literature Online were originally published in print form before being reproduced in electronic versions; in these cases, it is important to remember to give the publication details of both the original print source and the electronic version. For reference content such as biographies and student guides that are unique to Literature Online, you should give as much information as is available.

Conventions vary for citing works from an electronic subscription services, but most style guides stipulate a combination of the following details: the service's name, the electronic publisher, the library (or other subscribing institution), the date of access, and the URL of the service's home page.

Listed below are recommended citation formats for a poem, a journal article, and an author biography from Literature Online, in four of the most commonly used citation styles. Note that the biography in this case has no author or date of publication. These are included for guidance purposes only; users are advised to consult the published style guides listed at the foot of the page.

If you are using one of the Individual Literature Collections, rather than the Literature Online interface, you should give the title of the database in question. An example of this in MLA style would be:

Nashe, Thomas. The Vnfortvnate Traveller: Or, The life of Iacke Wilton. London, 1594. Early English Prose Fiction.
Cambridge University Library. 19 Jan. 2004 .

These are examples of citations in a bibliography or list of works cited. Citations in a footnote or endnote may need to be slightly different; guidance on citations in notes varies for each style, with some guides (such as the APA and MLA) stipulating that full citations should only be given in a list of works cited, not in footnotes.

For primary texts and journal articles, you may need to give page numbers as part of your citation. For texts, please note that page numbers given within the full text appear immediately before the text to which they refer. For journal articles, you may need to consult the page image to identify pagination.

These examples are based on the following publications:

Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th ed. (Washington, DC: American Psychological Association, 2001)

The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th ed. (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2003)
