Literature Online is a virtual library of more than 350,000 works of English and American poetry, drama, and prose written between the eighth century and the present day. It is a full-text database: in other words, the actual text of the printed work is included in each case.

Literature Online is fully searchable. At its simplest you can search the entire database for occurrences of a particular word. More complex searches can look for particular phrases, combinations of words or variant spellings. Other criteria can also be brought to bear, such as the author's nationality or gender, literary period and movement, and publication date. Many of these criteria can be combined to build up a precise and targeted search of the texts in Literature Online.

Literature Online offers two subscription options to institutions:

  • Literature Online Poetry Collection: Full text of 343,000 poems including English poetry from the eighth century to the present and American, African American and Canadian poetry from 1603 to the present.
  • Literature Online Complete Collection: Primary texts include English poetry from the eighth century to the present, American, African American and Canadian poetry from 1603 to the present, The Faber Poetry Library, English and American drama from 1280 to 1915 and English and American prose fiction from 1500 to 1914.

African Writers Series

This addition to the Literature Collections portfolio is a digital edition of the Heinemann print series which, for more than 40 years, played a central role in the history of postcolonial literature. The African Writers Series (AWS) was established in 1962, with the aim of publishing works by black African authors for a general readership in newly independent African nations. It went on to become the principal publishing outlet for new African writing, covering mainly fiction, but also non-fiction, poetry and drama; all the major African authors of the post-independence period were published in the AWS, alongside new editions of classic earlier texts, important political writings, and new works by generations of young authors from the 1960s to the early 21st century. Subscribers can access the African Writers Series as an individual collection as well as through the Literature Online interface.

Twentieth-Century American Poetry, Second Edition

This most recent addition to the Literature Collections portfolio brings together two existing Chadwyck-Healey databases, Twentieth-Century American Poetry and Twentieth-Century African American Poetry, with over 500 volumes of newly-licensed material representing the most important and influential poems by American writers of the Twentieth Century. The collection allows the reader a survey of the most influential and important movements, schools and distinctive voices of modern and contemporary American poetry
